Today is World Environment Day, so I’m thinking green. One of many environmentally conscious ideas I’ve noticed living both in Japan and England is the use of water butts. This simple device collects rain water that runs off the roof and down the gutter, and saves it for later use in the garden. The average butt holds enough water to fill a watering can 25 times, and, at least in this part of the UK, the butt could be completely filled 450 times in the course of an average year. Once we’re settled again in the States, I think we’ll fit one on the back gutter of our house. I can’t think of an easier way to conserve water and reduce my impact on the environment.
