Potted

101B5270June 9 — from down low

I know lots of folks who use old chimney pots as planters (I bought one at an auction for the same purpose), but I don’t expect to look up from my position down low to see one outlined against the sky! Bet Santa’s gonna have something to say about this!

Chaps

101_6551June 8 — an animal

Well, this one certainly caught me off guard. The only adult sheep in the field that wasn’t completely covered in a year’s worth of thick fleece. Yet not completely shorn, either. Did the farmer get halfway through and discover his shears just weren’t sharp enough to continue? Did he suddenly get word of an impending blizzard and want to leave this poor ewe with at least some protection from the elements? Was the ewe acting up so badly that the farmer couldn’t finish the back half of the shearing job? Are wool buyers now refusing to purchase wool that contains clumps of poo? Are woolly chaps the hottest fashion trend in the pastures this spring? Oh, if only an animal could talk, so I could get to the bottom of this ovine mystery.

Radiant

101_5798June 7 — bright

Standing in the silent aisle of St. Mary the Virgin (Church of England), the evening sun through the 15th century bell tower window bathing the prayer book in such brilliant light, the lyrics of “Silent Night” came unbidden to my mind. “…All is calm, all is bright…”

Chauffeured

101_6564June 6 — transport

101_6634It was no easy feat to cover all the ground at Europe’s largest antique fair today, but this lucky little Jack Russell terrier had his own chauffeur-driven transport to speed up the process. Still plenty of room alongside his waterbowl in the basket for purchases. Perhaps this taxidermied fox will catch his eye…

Butts

HPIM1675June 5 — environment

Today is World Environment Day, so I’m thinking green. One of many environmentally conscious ideas I’ve noticed living both in Japan and England is the use of water butts. This simple device collects rain water that runs off the roof and down the gutter, and saves it for later use in the garden. The average butt holds enough water to fill a watering can 25 times, and, at least in this part of the UK, the butt could be completely filled 450 times in the course of an average year. Once we’re settled again in the States, I think we’ll fit one on the back gutter of our house. I can’t think of an easier way to conserve water and reduce my impact on the environment

Campfire

100_0246June 4 — after dark

I’m cheating on the “daily” part of the challenge today by using this photo taken around the campfire at Cataloochee Ranch in July 2009–but only because the odds of me being awake to get a photo after dark tonight are slim to none. As we approach the summer solstice, the days are getting mighty long here at 52.1160ºN latitude. For the next couple of months, the skies won’t go completely dark until sometime after 11:00 p.m. and I’m normally well into my forty winks by then.

Breakfast

101_5843June 3 — on my table

Here’s an unusual sight for a Monday morning. Rarely is there a hot breakfast on my table. I’ve normally got a bowl of cereal or some toast in my lap while I’m sitting in front of the computer (an accident waiting to happen, I know). But I’ve got company this week, and I thought a considerate host should provide a more substantial breakfast for her guest (staying in so many B&Bs around the UK has rubbed off on me). So I pulled out all the stops, serving up my mom’s sausage and egg casserole recipe, some hot, toasted crumpets, and a bowl of fresh fruit. Tomorrow’s menu consists of today’s leftovers or a bowl of cereal. 🙂
